How this is calculated
The Minguo (民國) or Republic of China calendar numbers years from the founding of the Republic in 1912, which is Minguo year 1 — so the conversion is a fixed offset of 1911: subtract 1911 from a Western year to get the ROC year, add 1911 to go back. Months and days are identical to the Gregorian calendar; only the year number differs.
The ROC calendar is the official calendar of Taiwan: birth dates on national ID cards, driver’s licences, land registries, court documents and many product expiry dates use Minguo years. A date printed 115/03/15 means 15 March 2026. Dates before 1912 are conventionally written in Gregorian form, since the Minguo era has no year zero or negative years.
Watch for the century ambiguity on short dates: a Taiwanese expiry date of 15.05.10 most likely means Minguo 105 (2016) styles differ between products — when a two- or three-digit year could plausibly be a Minguo year (roughly 1–199), reading it as ROC and adding 1911 is usually correct for goods sold in Taiwan.
