Inputs
m = 2 kg, v = 10 m/s - 2
Linear momentum
p = m × v = 2 × 10 = 20
How does this calculator work?
Linear momentum equals mass times velocity (p = m × v), measured in kg·m/s. Enter any two of momentum, mass, and velocity, and the calculator solves for the third: m = p / v or v = p / m. A 2 kg object at 10 m/s has 20 kg·m/s of momentum.
Formula
How this is calculated
Linear momentum is the product of an object’s mass and its velocity: p = m × v. Enter any two of the three quantities and leave the third blank, and the calculator solves for the missing value using m = p / v or v = p / m.
Mass (m) is in kilograms (kg) and velocity (v) is in meters per second (m/s), giving momentum (p) in kilogram-meters per second (kg·m/s). Momentum is a vector quantity, so velocity (and therefore momentum) can be negative to indicate direction along an axis; the magnitude shown on the meter uses the absolute value.
The formula assumes a single object moving in a straight line at non-relativistic speeds. Division-by-zero cases are guarded: solving for mass requires a non-zero velocity, and solving for velocity requires a non-zero mass.
Frequently asked questions
In SI units momentum is measured in kilogram-meters per second (kg·m/s), the product of mass in kilograms and velocity in meters per second.
Yes. Momentum is a vector, so a negative value indicates motion in the opposite direction along the chosen axis. Its magnitude is always positive.
Rearrange p = m × v to v = p / m. Enter momentum and mass, leave velocity blank, and the calculator divides momentum by mass.
