How does this calculator work?

Crude Mortality Rate = (deaths ÷ population) × 100,000. Case Fatality Rate = (deaths ÷ confirmed cases) × 100 %. Crude rates are unadjusted for age and are not directly comparable across populations with different age structures. Both measures depend heavily on how completely deaths and cases are recorded.

How this is calculated

The crude mortality rate (CMR) expresses how many deaths occurred per unit of population — typically per 1,000, 10,000, or 100,000 — over a defined period. It is computed by dividing the number of deaths by the population at risk and multiplying by the chosen rate basis. "Crude" means the result is not adjusted for age, sex, or any other characteristic of the population, so comparing crude rates between groups with very different age structures can be misleading without further standardisation.

The case fatality rate (CFR) answers a different question: of all confirmed cases, what fraction died? It is deaths divided by confirmed cases, expressed as a percentage. The CFR is affected by how thoroughly cases are detected — if mild cases are widely missed, the denominator shrinks and the CFR rises, overstating lethality. Both measures are point-in-time estimates and should be interpreted alongside the study period, data quality, and population characteristics.

Frequently asked questions

The crude mortality rate counts deaths relative to the entire population at risk, regardless of whether individuals were infected. The case fatality rate counts deaths only among confirmed cases. Both measure lethality from a different vantage point.

Crude rates are not age-standardised. A country with an older population will naturally have more deaths per capita than a younger one, even if individuals face identical risk at each age. Age-standardised mortality rates control for this structural difference.

If only severe or hospitalised cases are tested, the denominator (cases) is understated and the CFR rises above the true infection fatality rate. Conversely, mass testing that captures mild and asymptomatic cases brings the CFR down closer to the infection fatality rate.
