How does this calculator work?
Multiply gas volume (scf or Sm³) by its calorific value (default 1,037 BTU/scf) to get BTU. Then: kWh = BTU ÷ 3,412; therms = BTU ÷ 100,000; GJ = BTU ÷ 947,817. Adjust the calorific value (HHV) for your specific gas supply — it is shown on your utility bill.

How this is calculated
Natural gas is metered by volume (cubic feet in the US, cubic metres in Europe), but pricing and environmental impact are based on energy content. The energy in a given volume is found by multiplying the volume by the gas's calorific value — specifically the higher heating value (HHV), which assumes water in combustion products condenses and releases its latent heat. The US EPA default is 1,037 BTU per standard cubic foot (scf); European pipeline gas typically runs 38–39 MJ per standard cubic metre (Sm³). Actual values vary with gas composition and can be found on your utility bill or meter certificate.
Once the energy in BTU is known, all other units follow from fixed conversion factors: 1 kWh = 3,412.14 BTU, 1 therm = 100,000 BTU, 1 MJ = 947.817 BTU, and 1 MMBtu = 1,000,000 BTU. These factors are exact by definition and independent of gas composition. The graph shows how BTU scales linearly with volume at your chosen calorific value.
This calculator uses standard conditions (60°F / 15°C, 1 atm) for volume measurement, which is the industry norm for billing. Gas metered at different temperatures or pressures must be corrected to standard conditions before using these conversions. For LNG or CNG, further corrections apply.
Frequently asked questions
Higher heating value (HHV) counts all the heat released when combustion products cool to room temperature, including the heat from condensing water vapour. Lower heating value (LHV) excludes that condensation heat. Utility billing uses HHV; boiler efficiency ratings often use LHV. HHV is roughly 10% higher than LHV for natural gas.
MCF is 1,000 standard cubic feet. Multiply MCF by 1,000 to get scf, then use this calculator. For example, 1 MCF × 1,037 BTU/scf = 1,037,000 BTU ≈ 1.037 MMBtu ≈ 10.37 therms.
Natural gas is mainly methane but contains small amounts of ethane, propane, and other hydrocarbons. Heavier hydrocarbons have higher energy density, so gas rich in ethane has a higher calorific value. Your utility publishes the actual value; 1,037 BTU/scf is a national average for US pipeline gas.
