How does this calculator work?
The Navy PRT scores push-ups (2 min), curl-ups (2 min) and a 1.5-mile run each from 0–100, then averages the three for a composite. Passing requires a composite ≥ 60 (Good Low) with no component failures. Standards are gender- and age-specific (per OPNAVINST 6110.1J estimates). Verify your official score at myprt.navy.mil.
Formula
How this is calculated
The Navy PRT assesses three fitness components: muscular endurance (push-ups in 2 minutes), core endurance (curl-ups in 2 minutes), and cardiovascular fitness (1.5-mile run). Each event is scored independently on a 0–100 scale based on gender- and age-specific performance tables from OPNAVINST 6110.1J. The composite score is the average of all three event scores.
Performance thresholds relax with age: the run time for a score of 100 ("Outstanding") increases from 8:15 for males aged 20–24 to 12:00 for males aged 60–64, reflecting that fitness naturally changes over a career. Female standards have a separate set of thresholds. This calculator uses linear interpolation between the maximum score (100 pts) and the minimum passing score (60 pts, "Good Low") to estimate intermediate values.
A composite score below 60 (Good Low) is a PRT failure, and failing any individual component — even with a high composite — also results in an overall failure. Sailors who fail are enrolled in a Fitness Enhancement Program (FEP). These estimates are derived from published OPNAVINST 6110.1J key breakpoints; always verify your official score using the Navy’s tool at myprt.navy.mil before any official PRT administration.
Frequently asked questions
As of OPNAVINST 6110.1J, a composite score of 60.0 or higher ("Good Low") is required to pass the PRT. However, all three components (push-ups, curl-ups and 1.5-mile run) must also meet their individual minimum thresholds — a component failure results in an overall PRT failure regardless of how high the composite score is.
Active-duty Navy personnel take the PRT semi-annually (twice per year). Reservists take it once per year during their annual PFA cycle. Sailors who score Outstanding may be eligible for a waiver from one semi-annual test. Those who fail enter the Fitness Enhancement Program and may be tested more frequently.
The Navy allows alternative cardio events for sailors with medical profiles limiting participation in the run. Approved alternatives include the 500-yard swim, 450-metre swim, stationary bike (12 minutes), elliptical trainer (12 minutes), and treadmill run. Speak with your medical officer to determine eligibility and which alternative is appropriate for your condition.
