Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Net salary = gross salary minus municipal tax on income above the basic allowance, state tax above the higher-rate threshold, and employee social contributions, plus any earned-income tax credit. Presets for Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Norway prefill typical rates; all values are editable.

Formula
Tax = municipal% × (A − allowance) + state% × (A − threshold) + social% × A − credit, Net = A − Tax (A = 12 × monthly gross)
How this is calculated

Enter your gross monthly salary and choose a country preset. Each preset fills in typical national figures: the average municipal (or base) income-tax rate, the basic allowance that is taxed at 0%, the threshold above which higher state tax starts, the state tax rate, employee social contributions (pension, unemployment and health insurance deducted from pay), and a flat annual earned-income tax credit. Every figure stays editable, so you can plug in your own municipality’s rate or your exact contribution percentages.

The calculation annualises your salary (A = 12 × monthly gross), applies the municipal rate to income above the basic allowance, adds state tax on income above the higher-rate threshold, adds social contributions on the full salary, and finally subtracts the tax credit. The result is split back into net pay per month and per year, with an effective total tax rate so you can see the overall share deducted.

The model is a simplified estimate: real Nordic payroll includes church tax, municipality-specific rates, deduction-dependent allowances and phase-in/phase-out rules for credits. Treat the output as a close approximation for budgeting and salary comparison, not as an official payroll statement.

Frequently asked questions

They use rounded national averages for recent tax years — for example an average Swedish municipal rate of about 32% and the Danish AM-bidrag of 8%. Your actual municipality, church-tax status and personal deductions shift the result, so adjust the editable fields to match your situation.

Income tax (municipal plus state) funds general public spending and is calculated on your taxable income. Social contributions are earmarked payments — pension, unemployment and health insurance — deducted from your gross pay; in Finland and Norway they are a visible share of the payslip, while in Sweden most social charges are paid by the employer on top of your salary.

Nordic systems reduce tax on earned income with credits — Sweden’s jobbskatteavdrag or Finland’s työtulovähennys. A flat annual credit approximates these: it is subtracted from the calculated tax, never below zero.
