How does this calculator work?
Divide the total area by the sheet area, add a waste percentage (typically 10%), and round up: Sheets = ⌈(area ÷ sheet area) × 1.10⌉. A standard 8×4 ft plywood sheet covers 2.97 m². A 5×4 m room needs ⌈(20 ÷ 2.97) × 1.10⌉ = 8 sheets.

How this is calculated
The calculator divides the total area to be covered by the area of one plywood sheet, then multiplies by a waste factor to account for cut pieces that cannot be reused. The result is rounded up to the nearest whole sheet — you cannot buy a fraction of a sheet. The standard 8 × 4 ft sheet (2440 × 1220 mm) has an area of 2.9768 m²; the metric 2500 × 1250 mm sheet is 3.125 m².
Waste allowance is typically 10% for straightforward rectangular layouts. For rooms with many cut-outs (doors, columns, odd angles), 15–20% is more realistic. Diagonal or herringbone laying patterns can waste 20–30%. The calculator lets you adjust the percentage to match your layout.
If you enter a price per sheet, the tool multiplies by the total sheet count to give a rough material cost. Add 10–20% to that for consumables (screws, adhesive) and labour if hiring a tradesperson. Prices vary significantly by grade (sheathing vs. marine vs. hardwood ply) and by region.
