How does this calculator work?
Kernels needed (cups) = people × serving cups ÷ expansion ratio (≈ 35× stovetop, 38× air-popped, 28× microwave). One cup of raw kernels weighs about 185 g and yields 4 generous servings. For 4 people at 4 cups each, you need about 67 g (≈ 5.7 tbsp) of raw kernels stovetop-popped.
Formula
How this is calculated
Raw popcorn kernels expand dramatically when heated: the moisture inside each kernel turns to steam, the hull shatters, and the starchy endosperm puffs out. Stovetop and oil-popped corn expands about 35 times its dry volume; an air-popper typically reaches 38 times (drier, lighter puffs); microwave bags expand roughly 28 times because they are pre-oiled and sealed in a tight bag that limits full expansion.
To find the total popped volume required, multiply the number of people by the per-person serving size. Dividing by the expansion ratio gives the volume of raw kernels needed. One US cup of dried whole kernels weighs approximately 185 g (6.5 oz), which the calculator uses to convert the kernel volume to a weight you can measure on a kitchen scale or tablespoon.
Expansion ratios are averages — the actual yield varies with kernel freshness, moisture content, popping temperature and pot size. Fresh kernels with 14–15% moisture content pop the most completely; older or too-dry kernels leave more unpopped "old maids." Using slightly more kernels than calculated ensures full bowls.
Frequently asked questions
About 2 cups of popped corn. One US tablespoon of raw kernels weighs roughly 12 g and expands about 30–35 times by volume (stovetop), yielding 1.8–2.2 cups of popped corn per tablespoon.
A snack portion is about 2–3 cups of air-popped corn (≈ 70–90 calories). A generous movie serving is 4–6 cups. For children or lighter eaters, 2 cups is usually sufficient; hungry adults at a long film may want 5–6.
Microwave bags are pre-coated in oil and sealed; the limited airspace and bag pressure reduce how fully each kernel puffs. Stovetop and air-popped corn heated in an open pan or chamber can expand more freely, giving a higher volume per kernel.
