Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Price per pound = total price ÷ weight in pounds. A $5.99 pack weighing 2.5 lb costs $2.40 per pound ($5.99 ÷ 2.5). Compare two items with different sizes by calculating each one's per-pound price — the lower figure is the better value, assuming quality is equal.

Formula
Price per lb = Total price ÷ Weight (lbs)
How this is calculated

When products are sold by weight, different package sizes make direct price comparison difficult. Dividing the total price by the weight in pounds gives a single per-pound figure that works for any package size. For example, 2.5 lb of chicken for $5.99 costs $2.40/lb, while 1 lb for $2.59 costs $2.59/lb — the larger pack is cheaper per pound even though it costs more overall.

The calculator also shows the equivalent price per ounce (divide by 16, since 1 lb = 16 oz) and price per kilogram (multiply by 2.20462, since 1 kg ≈ 2.20462 lb), letting you cross-compare products labelled in different units. All weights use avoirdupois pounds, the standard US system for food and general goods.

The result assumes the labelled net weight is accurate and represents only the product, not the packaging. Real-world value also depends on quality, moisture content (especially for meat), and whether you'll use the full package before it spoils.

Frequently asked questions

Calculate the price per pound for both: divide each product's total price by its total weight in pounds. The lower price per pound is the better cost-per-unit deal.

Yes. Enter the price for whatever quantity you are buying and the corresponding weight. If a store charges $2.49/lb and you want 3 lb, enter 7.47 as the price and 3 as the weight — or simply note the listed $2.49 directly.

Yes, enter any decimal weight such as 1.5 for one and a half pounds or 0.75 for three-quarters of a pound.
