How does this calculator work?
Counting units: pair=2, half dozen=6, dozen=12, baker's dozen=13, score=20, gross=144, great gross=1728. Convert by multiplying input by the from-unit factor, then dividing by the to-unit factor. All eight equivalents display at once. Conversions are exact — no rounding error from the unit factors themselves.
Formula
How this is calculated
Historical counting units arose in trade long before decimal standardisation. Each unit has a fixed factor relative to individual items: pair = 2, half dozen = 6, dozen = 12, baker's dozen = 13, score = 20, gross = 144 (a dozen dozens), and great gross = 1728 (a dozen gross). Converting between any two of them is a two-step process: multiply the input by the source factor to get the total individual count, then divide by the target factor.
All eight equivalents are shown simultaneously in the results table so you can compare every denomination at once. The bar chart scales values relatively (widest bar = 100%), making it easy to see proportions across units that can span several orders of magnitude — for example, 1 great gross versus 1 unit.
These are exact integer or simple fractional ratios, so conversions carry no rounding error unless the result is inherently non-integer (for example, 7 units expressed in dozens = 0.5833…).
Frequently asked questions
In medieval England, bakers faced severe penalties for underweight loaves. To stay safe, they added an extra item to every batch of 12, giving 13 per 'dozen.' The practice survived and baker's dozen has meant 13 ever since.
A gross equals 144 — a dozen dozens (12 × 12). It was the standard wholesale unit for small items such as buttons, pencils, screws and eggs. A great gross equals 1728, which is a dozen gross (12 × 144).
A score means 20. It comes from the Old Norse word 'skor,' referring to a notch cut in a tally stick to mark every twentieth item. The term is famous from the Gettysburg Address: 'Four score and seven years ago' = 87 years.
