Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

To scale a recipe, divide the servings you want by the servings it makes to get a scale factor, then multiply every ingredient by that factor. This calculator does it automatically: enter original and desired servings (or pick a ×2, ×3 or ÷2 preset), paste your ingredient list, and get each new quantity.

Formula
scale factor f = desired servings ÷ original servings; new quantity = original quantity × f
How this is calculated

The calculator first works out a single scale factor. In custom mode it divides your desired servings by the original servings, so going from 4 to 8 servings gives a factor of 2. The quick presets (×2, ×3, ÷2) skip the servings entirely and set the factor directly, which is handy when you just want to double or halve a batch.

Each line of the ingredient list is parsed as "quantity unit name". The leading quantity may be a whole number (3), a decimal (0.5) or a fraction (1/2, even mixed like 1 1/2). That quantity is multiplied by the scale factor while the unit and name are carried through unchanged, so "2 cups flour" at ×2 becomes "4 cups flour".

New quantities are rounded to friendly kitchen fractions (halves, thirds, quarters and eighths) when they are close to one, otherwise to two decimal places. This keeps results practical for measuring cups and spoons. Note that scaling is purely proportional: it does not adjust cooking times, pan sizes or leavening chemistry, which often need separate judgement when you change a recipe dramatically.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Choose a quick preset (×2, ×3 or ÷2) to set the scale factor directly and ignore the servings fields.

It does. Quantities can be decimals (0.5), simple fractions (1/2) or mixed fractions (1 1/2), and results are rounded back to common kitchen fractions.

No. Only ingredient amounts scale proportionally. Cooking time, temperature and pan size may still need manual adjustment for large changes.
