How does this calculator work?
Enter any date and your fiscal-year start month to get the calendar quarter (Q1-Q4), the matching fiscal quarter, and a fiscal-year label named by the year the fiscal year ends. The range meter also shows what percentage of the current calendar quarter has already elapsed.
Formula
How this is calculated
You enter a date (YYYY-MM-DD) and the month your fiscal year begins. The month is converted to a zero-based index (January = 0). The calendar quarter is floor(month0 / 3) + 1, so January-March is Q1, April-June is Q2, July-September is Q3 and October-December is Q4.
The fiscal quarter shifts the calendar so that your fiscal start month becomes the first month of fiscal Q1. We compute fiscalIndex = ((month0 - (startMonth - 1)) + 12) mod 12, which gives the number of months since the fiscal year began (0-11), then fiscalQuarter = floor(fiscalIndex / 3) + 1. When the fiscal start is January, fiscal and calendar quarters coincide.
The fiscal-year label uses the common convention of naming the fiscal year by the calendar year in which it ends (for example, a fiscal year starting in October 2025 is labelled FY 2026). Quarter progress is the fraction of the calendar quarter that has elapsed, measured in whole days from the first day of the quarter to the date entered, shown on the range meter. Invalid calendar dates such as February 30 are rejected.
Frequently asked questions
Q1 is January through March, Q2 is April through June, Q3 is July through September, and Q4 is October through December. Each quarter is three months long.
This tool labels a fiscal year by the calendar year in which it ends. For example, a fiscal year that runs from October 2025 to September 2026 is shown as FY 2026, matching the US federal convention. If your fiscal year starts in January, the fiscal year equals the calendar year.
Progress is the share of the calendar quarter that has passed, measured in whole days from the first day of the quarter up to the entered date, divided by the total days in that quarter, expressed as a percentage.
