How does this calculator work?
Reading time (minutes) = word count ÷ WPM. The average adult reads at about 238 words per minute. An 80 000-word novel takes roughly 336 minutes (5 hr 36 min) at that pace. Enter your personal WPM and any word count to find your reading time instantly.
Formula
How this is calculated
Reading time is the ratio of total words to reading speed: time (minutes) = word count ÷ WPM. The key variable is your personal reading speed, measured in words per minute (WPM). Research by Rayner et al. (2016, Psychological Science in the Public Interest) found the average silent reading speed for adults is about 238 WPM for non-fiction and varies from around 150 WPM for slow readers to 300–400 WPM for fast readers. Speed readers claiming 1 000+ WPM generally sacrifice comprehension for skimming speed.
Word count varies widely by text type: a short news article is typically 600–800 words (2–4 minutes at average speed), a novella around 40 000 words (~3 hours), and a typical novel around 80 000 words (~6 hours). Approx. page count is estimated at 250 words per printed page — a common average across most paperback typesettings, though it can range from 200 to 300 depending on font and margins.
Reading comprehension is not modelled here. Difficult technical material or unfamiliar vocabulary can slow effective reading speed by 30–50% compared to leisure reading at the same nominal WPM. Children and non-native speakers typically read at 100–150 WPM.
Frequently asked questions
Time yourself reading a passage of known word count for exactly one minute. Count the words you read (or locate a pre-counted text). Alternatively, time how long it takes to read a full page and divide the word count on that page by your time in minutes. Repeat across several passages for an average.
Research generally shows that above about 300 WPM comprehension starts to decline for most readers. Speed reading techniques often improve eye movement efficiency rather than true reading speed, and independent studies find comprehension drops sharply above 400–500 WPM. If understanding matters, reading at a comfortable pace wins over rushing.
Most published adult novels fall between 70 000 and 100 000 words (around 6–7 hours at 238 WPM). Genre fiction is often shorter (50 000–80 000 words), epic fantasy longer (200 000–400 000 words). Non-fiction books tend to run 50 000–80 000 words.
