How does this calculator work?
REM sleep averages 20–25% of total sleep time and is concentrated in later 90-minute cycles. Cycle 1 has ~10 min of REM; by cycle 4+ it reaches ~40 min. Getting 5–6 complete cycles (7.5–9 hours) ensures the REM-rich later cycles are not cut short. This calculator estimates your nightly REM from total sleep duration.

How this is calculated
A full night of sleep is organised into repeating 90-minute cycles. Each cycle passes through three main stages: light sleep (N1 and N2), deep slow-wave sleep (N3), and REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. The balance shifts across the night: early cycles contain more deep sleep, while later cycles are dominated by increasingly long REM periods — which is why cutting sleep short reduces REM disproportionately.
This calculator uses published average durations for each stage by cycle number. Cycle 1 has roughly 10 minutes of REM and 40 minutes of deep sleep; by cycle 4 and beyond, REM stretches to about 40 minutes while deep sleep shrinks to about 10 minutes. Light sleep fills the rest of each 90-minute window. Any partial cycle at the end of the night is treated as light sleep. The model is an approximation of population averages — actual stage durations vary by age, genetics, alcohol intake, stress and prior sleep debt.
Healthy adults typically spend about 20–25% of total sleep time in REM. REM sleep is linked to memory consolidation, emotional regulation and dreaming. If your estimated REM percentage falls consistently below 15–20%, consider whether you are sleeping enough complete cycles (at least 5–6 per night, around 7.5–9 hours).

REM pressure builds up as the night progresses — the brain cycles through deep sleep first (which is highest in sleep-debt repayment), then shifts toward longer REM periods later in the night. This is why the last 1–2 hours of sleep (which are almost entirely REM) are disproportionately valuable for memory and mood.
Most adults average 20–25% REM, which works out to about 90–120 minutes for a typical 7–8 hour night. There is no single magic number: what matters most is completing enough full 90-minute cycles so that the later, REM-rich cycles are not cut short.
Yes — alcohol significantly suppresses REM sleep in the first half of the night. Even moderate amounts before bed reduce total REM time and can cause fragmented, lighter sleep in the second half as the alcohol is metabolised. Avoiding alcohol within 3–4 hours of bedtime helps protect REM.
