How does this calculator work?
Round pen fencing = π × diameter; area = π × (diameter/2)². Divide the circumference by your panel length and round up to get the panel count. A popular 60 ft pen with 12 ft panels needs 16 panels and encloses roughly 2,827 sq ft (about 263 m²).

How this is calculated
A round pen (round yard or circular arena) is a circular enclosure used for training horses. Because it is a perfect circle, its perimeter is simply π × diameter — approximately 3.14159 times the diameter. The enclosed area is π × radius², where the radius is half the diameter. Both follow from the basic geometry of a circle.
To find how many panels you need, divide the circumference by the length of one panel and round up to the next whole number (you cannot use a fraction of a panel). The resulting actual perimeter (panels × length) is slightly longer than the ideal circle because panels are rigid and the final gap closes slightly wide — the difference is usually negligible.
Common round pen diameters are 40–50 ft for starting and basic groundwork, 60 ft for general training (the most popular size), and 80 ft or larger for lunging, liberty work or multiple horses. Standard metal horse panels are 10, 12, 14 or 16 ft long. The height requirement is typically 5–6 ft for safety.
Frequently asked questions
For general groundwork and starting young horses, 50–60 ft diameter is the most practical all-around size. A 60 ft round pen gives the horse enough room to move at a canter without bending too tightly. For liberty work or larger breeds, 70–80 ft is preferred. Smaller than 40 ft is generally too tight for safe riding.
A 60 ft diameter circle has a circumference of π × 60 ≈ 188.5 ft. Dividing by 12-ft panels gives 188.5 ÷ 12 = 15.7, rounded up to 16 panels. The actual perimeter is 16 × 12 = 192 ft, just slightly over the ideal 188.5 ft.
Enter the full diameter — the distance straight across the pen through the centre. If you know the radius (centre to edge), double it to get the diameter. For example, a 30-ft radius pen is 60 ft in diameter.
