Scale Conversion Calculator — Model to Real World
Enter a scale ratio (1:X) and either a real-world or model dimension — the calculator converts instantly in both directions. Works for architectural drawings, maps, miniatures, and any scaled representation.

How does this calculator work?
For a 1:X scale: model = real ÷ X, and real = model × X. Enter the scale factor and one dimension to get the other. Works for any unit — keep units consistent. Architectural plans (1:50), model railways (1:87), and topographic maps (1:25 000) all use the same simple ratio.
Formula
How this is calculated
A scale ratio of 1:X means every unit on the model or drawing represents X units in the real world. To convert a real-world dimension to model size, divide by X. To convert a model dimension back to real-world size, multiply by X. The unit stays the same in both directions — if you measure in centimetres, the result is in centimetres.
Common scale examples: 1:50 is typical for architectural floor plans (1 cm on paper = 50 cm in reality); 1:87 is HO-scale model railways; 1:25 000 is a standard topographic map (1 cm = 250 m). For maps it is often clearer to work in metres or kilometres — just keep the unit consistent throughout.
The fraction bar below visualises the ratio: the thin slice shows the model fraction, and the wide remainder shows how much larger the real world is. For very large scales like 1:25 000 the model slice is tiny but still visible, which intuitively illustrates how compressed a map is.
Frequently asked questions
1:50 means one unit on the drawing equals 50 of the same units in reality. So 2 cm on a 1:50 plan equals 100 cm (1 m) in the real building. To convert any drawing measurement, multiply by 50.
No — as long as you use the same unit for both the input and the output. Enter centimetres if you measure in centimetres; the result is in centimetres. For maps where real distances are large, metres or kilometres are more convenient.
Enter 1000 as the scale factor. A 3 cm measurement on a 1:1000 map equals 3 × 1000 = 3000 cm = 30 m in the real world. For readability, convert the result to metres or kilometres afterward.
