Volume needed (ml) = Length (m) × Width (mm) × Depth (mm). Divide by tube size (typically 280 ml) and round up, then add 10–20 % waste. For example: 5 m of 8 mm × 6 mm joint = 240 ml net → ~1 tube with waste. Enter your dimensions above for an exact count.

How this is calculated
A bead of sealant fills a rectangular (or approximately rectangular) cross-section gap of width W mm and depth D mm over a length L metres. The joint volume in millilitres is: L × (W ÷ 1000) × (D ÷ 1000) × 1 000 000. This is the net volume of product required.
A waste allowance of 10–20 % is standard practice — it accounts for the product left in the nozzle and tube base, uneven application, and any areas that need a second pass. The gross volume (net × waste factor) is divided by the tube size (typically 280–310 ml for a standard cartridge) and rounded up to the nearest whole tube, since you cannot buy fractions of a cartridge.
Actual coverage can vary with surface absorption, bead shape (round vs rectangular) and operator technique. This calculator treats the cross-section as a rectangle (the most conservative estimate). For a round bead, the actual volume is about 78 % of the rectangular estimate (π/4 × W × D), so the real usage may be slightly lower — the waste factor helps bridge this difference.
Frequently asked questions
Most standard sealant cartridges for hand or pneumatic guns are 280 ml or 310 ml. Some premium silicone and polyurethane products come in 300 ml or 400 ml sizes. Always check the packaging — coverage claims on the label usually assume a specific bead diameter.
Silicone stays permanently flexible and is waterproof — ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, windows and glazing. Acrylic (latex) caulk is paintable and easier to clean up but is less flexible and not suited to wet areas. The volume calculation is the same for both — choose the product chemistry based on your application.
A small amount of product remains in the cartridge tip, base and nozzle and cannot be used. Uneven joints, beginner application and multi-start joints all increase real-world usage beyond the theoretical volume. A 15 % waste allowance is a standard trade recommendation — increase it to 20 % for complex or irregular jobs.
