How does this calculator work?
Takt time = net available time ÷ daily demand. For an 8-hour shift with 30 min downtime producing 100 units, takt time is (450 min × 60 s) ÷ 100 = 270 s per unit. It sets the required production pace — the heartbeat of a lean line — so each workstation knows its target cycle time.

How this is calculated
Takt time (from German "Takt", meaning beat or pulse) is a lean manufacturing concept that sets the pace at which a production line must operate to satisfy customer demand exactly — no faster, no slower. It is calculated by dividing the net available production time per day by the number of units customers require per day. If takt time is 36 seconds, one unit must leave the line every 36 seconds.
Net available time excludes planned downtime: breaks, shift changeovers, scheduled maintenance, and team meetings. Multiply by the number of shifts to get the daily total. Unplanned downtime, quality rework, and waiting are not subtracted here — they reduce the actual performance against takt and are tracked separately as OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness).
Takt time is a target, not a guarantee. If the actual cycle time of a process exceeds the takt time, that process becomes a bottleneck and demand cannot be met. If it is significantly shorter, resources are over-provisioned for that station. Matching cycle time to takt time across all workstations — line balancing — is the goal. This calculator assumes a stable, repeatable demand; seasonal or batch production uses average demand over the planning horizon.

Takt time is the customer-driven pace — how often a unit must be completed to meet demand. Cycle time is the actual time it takes to complete one unit. When cycle time equals takt time, the line runs in perfect balance. When cycle time exceeds takt time, you have a bottleneck; when it is shorter, you have spare capacity at that station.
After calculating takt time, measure the cycle time at each workstation. Any station whose cycle time exceeds takt time needs improvement (kaizen, additional resources, or task redistribution). Workstations significantly under takt time may be combined. The goal is for all workstations to have cycle times at or slightly below takt time.
Takt time changes proportionally. If demand doubles, takt time halves — meaning you need twice the throughput. You can respond by adding shifts (increasing the numerator), adding capacity (a second parallel line), or by improving cycle time. Recalculate takt time whenever demand or shift patterns change significantly.
