Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Cost = capacity (kWh) × charge% added ÷ 100 ÷ efficiency × electricity rate. A typical 82 kWh Tesla from 20% to 90% at $0.16/kWh with 90% efficiency costs about $10.50 and takes roughly 5.4 hours on an 11.5 kW Level 2 home charger. Adjust all inputs for your specific setup.

Formula
Wall energy (kWh) = capacity × (target% − current%) ÷ efficiency • Cost = wall kWh × $/kWh • Time = wall kWh ÷ charger kW
How this is calculated

When a Tesla charges, energy travels from the wall through the on-board AC charger into the battery pack. Some energy is lost as heat in the charger and cables — typically 7–15% for a Level 2 (240 V) AC session. The efficiency figure captures this loss: to store X kWh in the battery, the wall must supply X ÷ (efficiency ÷ 100) kWh, and your electricity bill reflects the wall figure.

The cost is simply wall kWh multiplied by your utility rate. Charging time equals wall kWh divided by the charger's continuous power output in kW. A typical 48-amp Level 2 home EVSE delivers ~11.5 kW, so a 60 kWh session takes roughly 5–6 hours. A Tesla Supercharger V3 peaks at 250 kW — the same session takes around 15–20 minutes but uses DC and largely bypasses the on-board charger.

All figures are estimates. Real factors that change actual cost and time include battery temperature (cold batteries charge more slowly and draw more overhead), state of charge (Supercharger speeds taper above ~80% SOC to protect the battery), and variable grid voltage. US average electricity was ≈ $0.16/kWh in 2025 but varies widely — check your utility bill for the most accurate rate.

Frequently asked questions

A Model Y Long Range (82 kWh usable) charged from empty to full at $0.16/kWh with 90% efficiency draws about 91 kWh from the wall, costing roughly $14.50. At $0.12/kWh (common overnight EV rate) the cost drops to about $11. Use the calculator to enter your own rate and battery size.

AC–DC conversion in the on-board charger generates heat. A Level 2 charger is typically 85–93% efficient, so for every 10 kWh stored in the battery the wall supplies 10.8–11.8 kWh. DC fast charging (Supercharger) bypasses the on-board charger and achieves ~92–96% efficiency.

Tesla recommends a daily limit of 80–90% to preserve long-term battery health — lithium-ion cells degrade faster when held near 100% for extended periods. Reserve full charges for long trips. Set the target to 80 or 90 for everyday charging estimates.
