Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Electricity bill = kWh × unit_rate + standing_charge/day × days, then multiplied by (1 + VAT%). The effective all-in cost per kWh = total_bill / kWh. Enter your meter reading, tariff unit rate (e.g. 0.28/kWh), daily standing charge (e.g. 0.60/day) and VAT rate (e.g. 5 %) to get the full bill and an annual estimate. Rate values are editable — verify against your tariff.

Formula
Bill = kWh × unit_rate + standing_charge × days, then × (1 + VAT/100)
How this is calculated

A domestic electricity bill has at least two components: the usage charge (kWh consumed × unit rate) and a fixed standing charge (a daily fee for staying connected to the grid, regardless of how much you use). Most countries also apply VAT or a similar energy tax on top.

This calculator combines all three: it multiplies your kWh by the unit rate, adds the standing charge multiplied by the number of days in the billing period, and then applies VAT to the subtotal. The result is the total amount due. Dividing the total by the kWh used gives the effective all-in cost per kWh — a single number useful for comparing tariffs.

The annual estimate scales the billing-period result to 365 days; it assumes the same usage pattern all year, which is a reasonable approximation for a first estimate but will differ from actuality because electricity use is seasonal. Rate and VAT figures are editable estimates — check your own bill or tariff document for the exact values that apply to you.

Frequently asked questions

A standing charge (also called a service charge or daily access fee) is a fixed amount charged every day for the right to be connected to the electricity grid, regardless of how much energy you use. In the UK it is typically 30–70 p/day; it varies widely by country and supplier. Set it to 0 if your tariff is consumption-only.

VAT on household electricity varies: 5 % in the UK, 5–7 % in Ireland, 6–21 % across EU member states, 0 % in some regions, and sales-tax structures elsewhere. Enter 0 if your unit rate is already quoted inclusive of all taxes.

It is the total bill (including standing charges and VAT) divided by the kWh consumed. This "all-in" rate lets you compare tariffs that have different unit rates and standing charges on a level footing.
