How does this calculator work?
Thinset coverage depends on trowel notch size: roughly 50 ft²/bag (3/16" V-notch) down to 13 ft²/bag (3/4" square-notch). Multiply your area by (1 + waste %) and divide by the coverage rate, rounding up to whole 50 lb bags. Standard waste allowance is 10%; add more for complex cuts.

How this is calculated
Thinset (thin-set mortar, or tile adhesive) consumption is determined almost entirely by the notch size of the trowel used to spread it. The notched trowel leaves ridges of adhesive on the substrate; a deeper notch deposits more mortar per square foot. Industry coverage rates (how many square feet one 50 lb bag covers) are: roughly 50 ft²/bag for a 3/16-inch V-notch (mosaics and wall tiles), 42 ft²/bag for a 1/4×1/4-inch square-notch (small floor tiles), 30 ft²/bag for a 3/8×3/8-inch square-notch (the most common choice for floor tiles 8–14 inches), 20 ft²/bag for a 1/2×1/2-inch square-notch (large-format tiles), and about 13 ft²/bag for a 3/4-inch notch (very large or heavy tiles). These rates assume full back-buttering coverage and are mid-range estimates — always check the actual coverage printed on your product bag.
The calculator multiplies area by (1 + waste %) to account for partial tiles at edges, cuts, spillage and mixing losses. Ten percent is a standard allowance for straightforward layouts; complex diagonal or herringbone patterns and highly irregular rooms may need 15–20%. The result is divided by the coverage rate and rounded up to whole bags — you should never cut bags in a tiling project.
Note: coverage rates are approximate industry figures for cement-based thinset applied in one pass. Large-format tiles (> 15 inches) often require back-buttering the tile in addition to the floor spread, which increases consumption; consult the thinset manufacturer's data sheet for large-tile projects.

The rule of thumb is that the notch depth should be at least two-thirds of the tile's thickness and roughly equal to one-third of the tile's shortest edge. For standard 12-inch floor tiles a 3/8×3/8-inch square-notch is the most common choice. Large-format tiles (> 15 inches) need a 1/2-inch or deeper notch to achieve the full back contact required by ANSI standards.
Thinset is sold in whole bags and the mixed mortar has a limited working time (pot life) of about 30–60 minutes depending on the product and temperature. You cannot store mixed mortar — any leftover is wasted. Buying one extra bag prevents running short mid-job while adding minimal cost.
Yes. Industry standards (ANSI A108.5, TCNA) require at least 95% mortar contact for wet areas and large-format tiles. This usually means spreading thinset on both the substrate and the back of the tile. Back-buttering can increase consumption by 20–40% compared to substrate-only spreading, so plan accordingly for tiles larger than 15 inches.
