Tie Length Calculator — Necktie Size by Height & Knot

Get the ideal necktie length for your height and chosen knot style. The calculator accounts for the extra fabric consumed by larger knots (Half Windsor, Full Windsor) and shows whether you need a regular, long or extra-long tie.

cm

Tie length scales with torso length, which correlates with overall height

Larger knots consume more tie fabric — so need a longer tie

Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Recommended tie length = 145 cm + (height − 178 cm) × 0.65 + knot adjustment (0 for four-in-hand, +3 cm for half Windsor, +7 cm for full Windsor). Most men 5'10" (178 cm) need a 57 in (145 cm) regular tie; taller men or those using large knots need a long or extra-long tie.

Formula
Recommended length = 145 cm + (height − 178) × 0.65 + knot_adjustment
How this is calculated

A necktie hangs from a knot at the collar, and the tip should reach the centre of the belt buckle. Because torso length correlates with overall height, the industry standard is that a 145 cm (57 in) tie suits a person of about 178 cm (5'10") when tied with a four-in-hand knot. For every centimetre taller or shorter, the recommended length shifts by roughly 0.65 cm.

Knot size also matters: a Full Windsor knot wraps the wide blade around itself twice and uses about 7 cm more of the tie's working length than a four-in-hand. If you wear the same tie with a larger knot, the tip will ride significantly higher. The calculator adds this adjustment on top of the height-based length.

Standard retail ties come in three broad categories: regular (54–58 in / 137–147 cm) for average height, long (58–62 in / 147–157 cm), and extra-long (63 in / 160 cm+) for taller individuals. Narrow or knit ties are typically sold 1–2 in shorter than their woven counterparts. These are approximate recommendations — individual torso proportions, collar style and personal preference for tip placement will all affect the ideal choice.

Frequently asked questions

The classic rule is that the wide blade tip should rest at or just touch the top of the belt buckle. The narrow (back) blade should be slightly shorter and hidden behind the wide blade using the keeper loop. Very long or short ties draw attention to the mistake, so erring half an inch long is usually better than short.

Almost certainly yes. At 193 cm the calculator recommends roughly 160 cm (63 in). Most off-the-rack ties stop at 145–150 cm, so they will leave the tip well above your belt. Look for brands that sell XL or Tall ties (typically 160 cm / 63 in) or custom-cut options.

Tie width doesn't directly affect length, but very slim (< 6 cm) ties are usually sold pre-shortened to about 137–140 cm because they look proportionally correct at a shorter length. If you're buying a skinny tie, check the product's actual length rather than relying solely on this calculator.
