How does this calculator work?
Multiply room length by width for the floor area, then size the fan by band: up to 75 sq ft use 29–36 in, 76–144 use 36–42 in, 145–225 use 44–54 in, 226–400 use 52–60 in, and over 400 sq ft use a 60 in fan or two. Add about 6 in of downrod per foot of ceiling above 8 ft.

How this is calculated
Enter the room length and width and pick whether you are working in feet or meters; metric values are converted to feet (1 m = 3.28084 ft) and multiplied to get the floor area in square feet. Fan manufacturers map that area to a recommended blade-span band: rooms up to 75 sq ft suit a 29–36 in fan, 76–144 sq ft suits 36–42 in, 145–225 sq ft suits 44–54 in, 226–400 sq ft suits 52–60 in, and anything larger needs a 60 in or larger fan or two smaller fans for even airflow. The tool reports the midpoint of the band as a single recommended span in both inches and centimeters.
The ceiling height drives the downrod tip. To keep the blades about 8–9 ft above the floor for the best air movement, a standard 8 ft ceiling uses a short 6 in downrod, and roughly 6 more inches of rod are added for every foot of ceiling above 8 ft. The result is rounded and never drops below a 3 in minimum so the motor still clears the mount.
Assumptions: rooms are treated as rectangles, area bands follow common ENERGY STAR / manufacturer sizing charts, and the downrod figure is a starting point — sloped ceilings, beams, or low 8 ft ceilings with flush mounts may call for a different bracket. All lengths must be positive; zero or negative entries return no result.

Measure the length and width of the floor in the same unit, multiply them for the area in square feet, then match that area to the recommended blade-span band. For long or open rooms over 400 sq ft, two fans usually move air more evenly than one oversized fan.
Aim to hang the blades 8–9 ft above the floor. An 8 ft ceiling needs only a short 6 in downrod, and you add about 6 in of rod for each additional foot of ceiling height, so a 10 ft ceiling uses roughly an 18 in downrod.
No. An oversized fan in a small room looks bulky and forces high speeds, while an undersized fan in a large room cannot circulate enough air. Matching the blade span to the floor area gives the most comfortable, efficient airflow.
