Tree height = (horizontal distance x tan(elevation angle)) + observer eye height. Stand back, measure the flat distance to the trunk, read the angle to the treetop with a clinometer or phone app, and add your eye height. Accuracy is typically within 2 to 5 percent.

How this is calculated
The tangent method is the standard field technique for measuring tree height without specialist equipment. Stand on flat ground a measured horizontal distance from the base of the tree, then use a clinometer or a phone inclinometer app to measure the angle of elevation to the highest point of the crown. Because the observer, the tree base, and the treetop form a right triangle, the vertical side above eye level equals the horizontal distance multiplied by the tangent of the elevation angle. Adding your eye height converts that into the total tree height from the ground.
For best results, keep the ground as level as possible between you and the tree. On slopes, the horizontal distance should be the plan distance rather than the slope distance along the ground. Move far enough back so the angle stays below about 60 degrees, as steep angles amplify small angular errors. A distance equal to one to two times the expected tree height is a common practical rule.
The method assumes the measured angle hits the topmost point of the crown and that the observer is looking at a true horizontal distance to the trunk base. Leaning trees require a correction. The slant distance shown is the straight-line distance from the observer to the treetop.
