How does this calculator work?
Leaf count ≈ LAI × (π × crown radius²) ÷ average leaf area. Leaf Area Index ranges 2–8 depending on tree type; typical values: deciduous 5, conifer 6, tropical 7. The result is a scientific estimate — accurate to within an order of magnitude for most trees.

How this is calculated
No one counts every leaf — ecologists estimate leaf numbers using the Leaf Area Index (LAI), a dimensionless ratio that describes how many square metres of leaf surface sit above each square metre of ground. A deciduous forest typically has an LAI of 4–6, meaning 4–6 m² of leaf area for every 1 m² of floor. Multiplying LAI by the projected crown area gives total leaf area; dividing by the typical one-sided area of a single leaf gives the leaf count.
Crown area is approximated as a circle with the measured radius — acceptable for open-grown trees with roughly symmetrical crowns. The LAI preset values here are representative literature midpoints (deciduous ~5, conifers ~6, tropical ~7), but real trees vary considerably by age, health, site conditions, and season. Leaf area similarly varies within a species: the defaults (oak ≈ 30 cm², pine needle cluster ≈ 5 cm², tropical ≈ 60 cm²) are typical values — use the custom option and a measured sample for a tighter estimate.
The result is inherently an order-of-magnitude estimate — useful for educational purposes, carbon-flux calculations, and ecological modelling, but not a precise count. A medium-sized deciduous tree with a 4 m crown radius typically carries 100,000–500,000 leaves.

LAI is the ratio of total one-sided leaf area to the ground area covered by the plant canopy. An LAI of 5 means 5 m² of leaf surface exists for every 1 m² of ground beneath the crown. It is the standard ecological metric for canopy density and is measured with instruments like plant canopy analysers (e.g., LAI-2200) or derived from satellite imagery.
The estimate is accurate to roughly an order of magnitude — it should be in the right ballpark (tens of thousands vs hundreds of thousands) but will not match an exact count. Precision improves if you measure the actual crown radius carefully and sample leaves to get a species-specific average leaf area rather than relying on the generic presets.
Conifer "leaves" are needles with a very small individual area (≈3–8 cm² per needle cluster), but there are vastly more of them per branch and they persist year-round. The higher LAI (≈6) partly reflects this density. Deciduous trees have larger but fewer leaves per unit area, and shed them seasonally.
