How does this calculator work?
Wait (days) = (population × % ahead ÷ 100 × doses per person) ÷ daily doses. For Northern Ireland (1.9 M people, ~20 k doses/day, 2 doses/person), someone at the 40 % mark (JCVI Group 8) waited roughly 76 days. All inputs are editable to model any scenario.
Formula
How this is calculated
Northern Ireland followed the UK Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) nine-group priority framework from December 2020, administered through the Public Health Agency (PHA) and GP surgeries. The nine groups proceed from the most clinically vulnerable — care-home residents and workers, then age bands from 80+ down to 50–59 — followed by all remaining adults aged 16 and over. Each group's start percentage reflects the approximate cumulative share of the population that receives a vaccine before that cohort is called.
The default values — 1.9 million population and 20,000 doses per day — represent approximate 2021 Northern Ireland figures. Vaccination speed varied; the daily rate was slower in early weeks and accelerated as supply and logistics improved. You can edit any figure to model different delivery scenarios.
This estimate assumes continuous delivery at the chosen daily rate from day one. In practice, rollout was phased, appointment slots were released in batches, and some people were vaccinated out of strict priority order. Use the result as a planning guide, not a precise date.
Frequently asked questions
Northern Ireland used the same JCVI priority groups as England, Scotland and Wales, but the PHA managed its own delivery logistics, appointment systems and regional health trust coordination, leading to slightly different throughput timings.
Choose the group that best describes your primary eligibility — for example, if you are 63 with a high-risk condition, you may fall under Group 7 (high risk) rather than Group 8 (age 60–64). Clinicians assessed individual cases.
Yes — the 20,000 doses/day default is an estimate for the 2021 Northern Ireland peak. Enter a different number to model slower supply or a faster accelerated rollout.
