Vaccine Queue South Africa Calculator — COVID-19 Wait Time
Find your estimated position in the South Africa COVID-19 vaccination queue. Select your EVDS phase, verify the 2021 population and daily-dose defaults, and see roughly how many days until your phase begins.

People ahead in queue
60,000,000 × 28 ÷ 100 = 16,800,000 - 2
Doses needed for groups ahead
16,800,000 × 2 = 33,600,000 - 3
Estimated waiting time
33,600,000 ÷ 200,000 = 168Total doses ahead divided by the daily vaccination rate gives waiting days.
How does this calculator work?
Wait (days) = (population × % ahead ÷ 100 × doses per person) ÷ daily doses. For South Africa (60 M people, ~200 k doses/day, 2 doses/person), someone at the Phase 3a mark (~28 % ahead) waited roughly 168 days. All inputs are editable 2021 estimates.
Formula
How this is calculated
South Africa launched its COVID-19 vaccination programme in February 2021 using the Electronic Vaccination Data System (EVDS) for registration and allocation. The programme followed a phased approach: Phase 1a (Sisonke study) covered healthcare workers, Phase 1b extended to care-home residents and staff, Phase 2 covered adults aged 60+ and essential workers with comorbidities, and Phase 3 opened to the general adult population from age 18. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine, used in Phase 1, requires only one dose; most later vaccines (Pfizer-BioNTech) require two.
The calculator translates each phase into an approximate cumulative percentage of the population that has been vaccinated before that cohort starts. Multiplying this fraction by the total population gives the number of people ahead; dividing by the number of daily doses administered (per person) gives the estimated waiting days. Default values — 60 million population and 200,000 doses per day — represent 2021 South Africa estimates and can be adjusted.
Actual rollout pace was constrained by supply chain challenges, cold-chain capacity in rural areas, and hesitancy. The 200,000 doses/day default reflects a mid-2021 peak; early rollout was much slower. Adjust the daily figure to match the period you are modelling.
Frequently asked questions
The Electronic Vaccination Data System is South Africa's national registration and scheduling platform. Citizens registered on EVDS and were called for vaccination in phase order; your EVDS confirmation indicated which phase you were eligible for.
Phase 1 used J&J (1 dose) but later phases shifted largely to Pfizer-BioNTech (2 doses). Change the doses-per-person field to 1 if you want to model the Phase 1 Sisonke period specifically.
The calculator does not distinguish between brands — it models throughput as a single daily dose count. To model a specific brand mix, weight the daily capacity by the average doses per person across the brands in use at that phase.
