Total experience points to go from your current level to the target
- 1
Cumulative XP at current level
(5 − 1) × (250 × 5 + 500) = 7,000 - 2
Cumulative XP at target level
(25 − 1) × (250 × 25 + 500) = 162,000 - 3
XP needed (gap)
162,000 − 7,000 = 155,000
How does this calculator work?
XP needed = (targetLevel−1)×(250×targetLevel+500) minus the same formula for your current level. Story-focused play earns roughly 2 500 XP/hr; mixed play ~1 500 XP/hr. Divide the XP gap by your earning rate to get the estimated hours.
Formula
How this is calculated
In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, each level requires progressively more experience points. The XP threshold to advance from level k to k+1 is 500k + 500, which means level 1→2 costs 1 000 XP, level 2→3 costs 1 500 XP, and so on, growing by 500 XP per level. Summing this arithmetic sequence gives the total cumulative XP needed to reach level N from level 1: (N−1) × (250N + 500).
The XP needed to go from your current level to any target level is simply the difference between the two cumulative totals. The time estimate divides this XP by a chosen earning rate. Story-focused play typically earns 2 000–3 000 XP per hour through main and secondary quests, while pure grinding yields considerably less. These earning-rate presets are community estimates based on typical play patterns and will vary with difficulty, DLC quests, and individual playstyle.
The XP formula is based on the published levelling table from the Witcher community wiki (as of the 2023 next-gen update); the maximum in-game level is 100 with the Blood and Wine DLC installed.
Frequently asked questions
Story quests and secondary quests award the most XP per minute of play. Monster contracts are efficient and enjoyable but slightly slower overall. Pure grinding (clearing question marks or replaying encounters) is the least efficient method — the game reduces XP for enemies well below your level.
The base game caps at level 70. With the Hearts of Stone DLC the soft cap rises to around 80, and with Blood and Wine the hard cap is 100. This calculator allows target levels up to 100.
Yes — The Witcher 3 reduces XP from enemies and quests when the enemy level is far below your own. At around 5+ levels below you, XP starts dropping; at 10+ levels below, you may earn very little. Stay close to enemies and quests at or above your level for optimal XP.
