RMD Calculator — Required Minimum Distribution

Πώς λειτουργεί αυτή η αριθμομηχανή;
RMD = prior December 31 balance ÷ IRS Uniform Lifetime Table factor. The factor (e.g. 26.5 at age 73) declines each year so the withdrawal percentage rises slowly. RMDs begin at 73 (born 1951–1959) or 75 (born 1960+) and are taxed as ordinary income. Missing the deadline triggers a 25% excise tax.

How this is calculated
Once you reach the required beginning date, the IRS mandates annual withdrawals — called Required Minimum Distributions — from tax-deferred retirement accounts (traditional IRAs, SEP-IRAs, SIMPLE IRAs, 401(k)s, 403(b)s, and most other employer plans). Under the SECURE 2.0 Act (2023), RMDs begin at age 73 for individuals born between 1951 and 1959, and at age 75 for those born in 1960 or later. Roth IRAs are exempt from RMDs during the original owner's lifetime.
The IRS Uniform Lifetime Table (updated for 2022) assigns a distribution period to each age — a declining factor that represents the IRS's estimate of remaining life expectancy for the account owner (and a hypothetical beneficiary 10 years younger). Dividing the prior December 31 account balance by this factor gives the RMD for that year. The factor falls each year so the withdrawal percentage slowly rises, accelerating the drawdown in your late 80s and 90s. A spouse who is more than 10 years younger than you may use the Joint Life Expectancy Table (Table II) instead, which gives lower RMDs; this calculator uses the standard Uniform Lifetime Table.
The 20-year balance projection applies the expected annual return to each year's opening balance and then subtracts the RMD computed at the age for that year. It is illustrative — real returns vary, tax is not deducted, and you may take more than the RMD each year. Failing to take the full RMD by December 31 (or April 1 in the first RMD year) triggers a 25% excise tax on the shortfall (reduced to 10% if corrected within two years).

Under SECURE 2.0 (effective 2023), the first RMD must be taken by April 1 of the year after you turn 73 (if born 1951–1959) or 75 (if born 1960 or later). All subsequent RMDs must be taken by December 31 of each year. Taking both the first and second RMD in the same calendar year can push you into a higher tax bracket — many planners recommend taking the first one before December 31 of the RMD-start year.
The IRS charges a 25% excise tax on the amount you failed to withdraw. This penalty drops to 10% if you withdraw the shortfall and file a corrective return within two years. Starting in 2023 the IRS no longer automatically waives this tax, so it is important to withdraw at least the minimum by the deadline.
Yes. The RMD is the minimum, not the maximum. Any additional withdrawal is also taxable as ordinary income in the year taken. Excess withdrawals in one year do not reduce a future year's RMD — each year's RMD is calculated independently from that year's December 31 balance and distribution period factor.
