Convert any data size by multiplying by the input factor (bytes per unit) then dividing by the target factor. Decimal units use powers of 1 000 (KB = 10³, MB = 10⁶, GB = 10⁹) while binary IEC units use powers of 1 024 (KiB, MiB, GiB). The ~7% gap between GB and GiB explains why a "1 TB" drive shows as ~931 GB in Windows.

How this is calculated
Every unit is converted by first finding the number of bytes: multiply the input value by its factor (e.g. 1 GB × 10⁹ = 1 000 000 000 bytes), then divide that byte count by each target unit's factor to get the results. This two-step chain means any pair of units can be converted without dedicated lookup tables.
Two naming families exist. Decimal (SI) units use powers of 1 000: 1 KB = 10³ bytes, 1 MB = 10⁶ bytes, 1 GB = 10⁹ bytes. These are the units used by hard-drive manufacturers and cloud storage providers. Binary (IEC 80000-13) units use powers of 1 024 and carry the prefix "i": 1 KiB = 2¹⁰ = 1 024 bytes, 1 MiB = 2²⁰ = 1 048 576 bytes, 1 GiB = 2³⁰ = 1 073 741 824 bytes. Operating systems (Windows, macOS, Linux) have historically reported sizes in binary units while labelling them with the decimal name ("GB"), which is the source of the classic "I bought 1 TB but Windows shows only 931 GB" confusion — 1 000 000 000 000 bytes ÷ 1 024³ ≈ 931 GiB.
Bits and bytes are linked by the 8-bits-per-byte rule: 1 byte = 8 bits, so 1 bit = 0.125 bytes.

Drive makers measure in decimal GB (10⁹ bytes), but Windows reports in binary GiB (2³⁰ bytes) while labelling them "GB". 1 000 000 000 000 bytes ÷ 1 073 741 824 ≈ 931 GiB, which Windows displays as 931 GB.
1 MB (megabyte) = 1 000 000 bytes (decimal/SI). 1 MiB (mebibyte) = 1 048 576 bytes (binary/IEC). They differ by about 4.86%. Data rates (Wi-Fi, fibre) use decimal MB/s; RAM and OS file sizes often use binary MiB.
1 GB (gigabyte, decimal) = 1 000 000 000 bytes. 1 GiB (gibibyte, binary) = 1 073 741 824 bytes. The difference is about 7.4%.
