Payload capacity = GVWR − curb weight. Subtract your cargo and passengers (×average weight) to get remaining capacity. Total weight / GVWR × 100 gives load percentage — keep it under 100% to stay within the legal and safe limit. GVWR is on the door-jamb sticker; exceeding it overloads brakes, tyres and suspension.

How this is calculated
Every road vehicle has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) stamped on a placard in the door jamb or B-pillar. It is the maximum safe total weight of the vehicle when fully loaded — including the vehicle structure, all fluids, cargo, occupants, tongue weight from a trailer and any fitted accessories. Exceeding GVWR overloads the brakes, tyres, suspension and frame, reduces stopping ability, and is illegal on public roads in most jurisdictions.
Payload capacity is GVWR minus curb weight. Curb weight is the vehicle's mass with all standard fluids (fuel at 90%, coolant, oil, washer fluid) but no cargo or passengers. The available payload — what you can actually load — is divided between cargo and passengers. Passengers are weighted at the average you specify; the US DOT uses 150 lbs (68 kg) for rated capacity labels, though actual occupant weights vary.
The load percentage shows how close you are to the limit: below 80% is comfortable, 90–100% approaches the limit, and above 100% means the vehicle is overloaded. Note that GVWR is not the same as towing capacity or Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR), which applies when a trailer is attached.

The GVWR is on a yellow or white Federal Safety Certification sticker in the driver's door jamb, on the B-pillar, or inside the fuel-filler door. It is also in the owner's manual. For heavy trucks it appears on a gross-weight plate near the cab.
Yes. GVWR is the maximum total weight including all passengers, driver and cargo. Curb weight (the unladen vehicle) does not include occupants, so you must add all passengers and cargo when checking the limit.
GVWR is the maximum rated total weight. Payload capacity = GVWR − curb weight — it is the weight you can actually add in people and cargo. For example, a pickup with a 6,800 lb GVWR and a 4,500 lb curb weight has a 2,300 lb payload capacity.
