How this is calculated
Parts per million (ppm) expresses a dimensionless ratio: one part of a substance in one million parts of the whole. It is identical to mg/kg for mass-based measurements, and to mg/L for dilute aqueous solutions where one litre of water weighs approximately one kilogram. This equivalence is exact enough for most water-quality and environmental work, but breaks down for dense liquids, gases at non-standard conditions, or very high concentrations.
Conversion is straightforward: each unit represents a power-of-ten multiple of the underlying dimensionless fraction. 1 ppm = 1 × 10⁻⁶; 1 ppb = 1 × 10⁻⁹; 1 ppt = 1 × 10⁻¹²; 1 % = 1 × 10⁻²; 1 ‰ = 1 × 10⁻³. The calculator converts your input to the fraction first, then to every target unit. For gas-phase concentrations, ppm can also be expressed as ppmv (parts per million by volume), which follows the same arithmetic but has a different physical meaning from mass-based ppm — this calculator handles mass-fraction conversions only.
Practical reference points: drinking-water fluoride limits are around 0.7–1.5 ppm; lead limits are often 10–15 ppb; atmospheric CO₂ is about 420 ppm; and 1% alcohol in a beverage equals 10,000 ppm by mass.

For dilute aqueous solutions — the vast majority of environmental, water-quality and food-safety uses — yes. One litre of water at standard conditions weighs approximately one kilogram, so 1 mg/L ≈ 1 mg/kg = 1 ppm. The approximation holds to better than 0.1% up to about 10,000 ppm. At higher concentrations or for non-water liquids, use the actual solution density to convert exactly.
ppmv is parts per million by volume (often used for gas mixtures, e.g. atmospheric CO₂), while ppmm is parts per million by mass. For ideal gases the two coincide only if the molecular weights are equal. This calculator converts mass-fraction concentrations; for gas-phase ppmv conversions you also need the molecular weights of the gas and the mixture.
Divide by 10,000. For example, 500 ppm = 500 / 10,000 = 0.05%. Equivalently, multiply by 0.0001. Going the other way: 1% = 10,000 ppm.
