For resistors in series, add the values: Rs = R1 + R2 + ... For resistors in parallel, add the reciprocals and invert: Rp = 1 / (1/R1 + 1/R2 + ...). The series total is the largest possible combination, while the parallel total is always smaller than the smallest resistor.

How this is calculated

Provide your resistor values in ohms, separated by commas, spaces, or new lines. Blank entries and zero or negative values are ignored, so you can freely edit the list without breaking the calculation.

For a series connection the same current flows through every resistor, so their resistances simply add: Rs = R1 + R2 + ... + Rn. For a parallel connection the same voltage is across every resistor, so the reciprocals add: 1/Rp = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + ... + 1/Rn, and the equivalent resistance is Rp = 1 / (sum of 1/Ri). The parallel total is always smaller than the smallest individual resistor.

All values are treated as ideal resistances in ohms; wiring resistance, tolerance, and temperature effects are not modeled. A single resistor returns itself for both totals, and a list that contains only zero or blank entries produces no result.

Adding a parallel path gives current more ways to flow, which lowers overall resistance. The parallel equivalent is always less than the smallest resistor in the group.

You can separate resistor values with commas, spaces, or new lines. The calculator ignores empty, zero, and negative entries.

This tool computes one all-series total and one all-parallel total. For mixed networks, reduce each sub-group separately and combine the intermediate results step by step.
