How this is calculated
Most of these units were once genuinely used for everyday measurement before the metric system arrived. The hand (4 inches) has been used to measure horse height since at least the 16th century and is still the official unit in horse racing. The furlong (220 yards, originally the length a team of oxen could plough without resting) lives on in horse-racing distances and some Commonwealth land records. The chain (22 yards, invented by Edmund Gunter in 1620) was the standard surveying unit that produced the acre (10 chains × 1 chain). The fathom (6 feet) was the standard depth unit in marine navigation before SI. The league (3 miles) was a common travel-distance unit in pre-industrial Europe and famously used in Jules Verne's '20 000 Leagues Under the Sea'.
The cubit is one of the oldest known units of length — roughly the distance from elbow to fingertip (~18 inches). Different ancient cultures defined it slightly differently; this calculator uses the common cubit of exactly 18 inches (0.4572 m). The smoot is a humorous unit created in 1958 when MIT student Oliver Smoot lay down end-to-end to measure the Harvard Bridge in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The bridge is officially 364.4 ± 1 ear smoots long, and the paint markings are repainted annually by MIT students.
The light year (9.461 × 10¹⁵ m) is an astronomical distance unit equal to the distance light travels in one Julian year (365.25 days). For any distance on Earth, the light-year value will be an extremely small fraction — nanoscopic compared to interstellar scales.
