How this is calculated
Fuel economy measures how far a vehicle travels on a unit of fuel. In the US and UK the standard unit is miles per gallon (MPG) — higher is better. In most of the rest of the world, fuel consumption is expressed as litres per 100 kilometres (L/100 km) — lower is better. The two are reciprocals: MPG (US) = 235.215 ÷ (L/100 km).
To measure your real-world MPG, fill the tank completely, reset your trip odometer, drive normally, then fill up again and note how many gallons it took and how far you drove. Divide miles by gallons (or multiply litres by 100 then divide by km for L/100 km). This gives a far more accurate figure than the manufacturer's rated economy, which is measured in lab conditions.
Note that 1 UK (Imperial) gallon ≈ 1.20095 US gallons, so a figure quoted as "mpg" in Britain is about 20% higher than the same MPG figure in American units. The calculator shows the US MPG figure; the UK equivalent is shown in the secondary stats. Fuel economy varies with driving style, speed, air conditioning, tyre pressure, load, and temperature.

Use the formula: L/100 km = 235.215 ÷ MPG (US). So 30 MPG ≈ 7.84 L/100 km. The calculator performs this conversion automatically in both directions.
Official ratings are measured under controlled laboratory conditions. Real-world driving involves highway speed variation, air conditioning, cold starts, traffic idling, and cargo weight — all of which reduce efficiency. The EPA's combined city/highway figure typically runs 15–25% above real-world averages for most drivers.
For a passenger car in 2024, above 35 MPG (US) / under 6.7 L/100 km is considered good; above 45 MPG / under 5.3 L/100 km is excellent (hybrid territory). SUVs and trucks average 20–28 MPG. Electric vehicles skip the MPG metric entirely — they use MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) based on energy content.
