  1. 1

    Gross Rating Points

    40% × 3 = 120
GRP counts gross impressions — the same person exposed multiple times is counted each time.
  2. 2

    Total impressions

    (40 ÷ 100) × 1.000.000 × 3 = 1.200.000
  3. 3

    Cost per rating point (CPP)

    50.000 ÷ 120 = 416,67

Come funziona questo calcolatore?

GRP = Reach% × Frequency. A campaign with 40% reach and 3 average exposures delivers 120 GRP. Cost Per Rating Point = total spend ÷ GRP; CPM = spend ÷ (impressions ÷ 1000), where impressions = (reach/100) × universe × frequency. Enter reach, frequency, spend and audience size to compute all four metrics.

Formula
GRP = Reach% × Frequency • CPP = Cost ÷ GRP • Impressions = (Reach/100) × Universe × Frequency • CPM = Cost ÷ (Impressions/1000)
How this is calculated

GRP (Gross Rating Points) is the standard currency of media planning. It equals reach — the percentage of the target audience exposed to an ad at least once — multiplied by average frequency — the average number of times each reached person sees it. A campaign with 40% reach and 3 average exposures delivers 120 GRP. GRPs accumulate across placements: two spots each with 20% ratings total 40 GRP, regardless of duplication between their audiences.

Cost Per Rating Point (CPP, also called CPRP) is the total campaign cost divided by GRP. It lets planners compare the efficiency of different media and dayparts on a standardised basis. A lower CPP means the same audience pressure costs less. CPM (Cost Per Thousand impressions) divides the cost by total impressions and multiplies by 1,000; it is more useful for digital and cross-media comparisons where duplicated impressions matter.

Total impressions = (reach fraction) × universe × frequency. Note that GRP is a gross figure — it counts duplicated exposures and does not equal net reach. For example, 120 GRP could come from 40% reach × 3 frequency or 60% reach × 2 frequency: the GRP is the same but the net audience coverage and impression patterns differ. Media planners usually set a target GRP level (e.g. 200–400 GRP for a product launch) and then optimise reach and frequency to achieve it within budget.

Domande frequenti

GRP (Gross Rating Points) measures the total delivery against the entire population; TRP (Target Rating Points) measures delivery against a specific target audience (e.g. adults 25–54). TRP = Target Reach% × Target Frequency. The formula is the same — only the audience definition changes.

It depends on category, market and objective. A typical TV consumer goods launch in a major market uses 200–400 GRP per week at flight. Maintenance campaigns may run 50–150 GRP/week. There is no universal target — campaign objectives, competitive spending levels and diminishing-return curves all influence the optimal level.

No. GRP is a gross metric — it counts each impression whether or not the same person saw the ad before. Two spots each reaching 20% of the audience deliver 40 GRP even if the audiences overlap entirely. Net reach (unduplicated audience) requires audience research or modelling beyond the GRP formula.
