How this is calculated
The nanometre (nm) is one billionth of a metre (10⁻⁹ m). It is the standard unit for the wavelengths of visible and near-visible light (ultraviolet: 10–380 nm; visible: 380–700 nm; near-infrared: 700 nm–1 mm), atomic and molecular dimensions (a hydrogen atom has a radius of about 0.053 nm; a DNA double helix is ~2 nm wide), and semiconductor process nodes (modern transistor gate lengths are 2–10 nm).
All conversions are exact SI-prefix multiplications. The converter multiplies the entered value by the factor that converts it to nanometres, then divides by each other factor. For very small values (picometres, used for covalent bond lengths such as the C–C bond at ~154 pm = 0.154 nm) or very large ones (millimetres and beyond), the output is expressed in scientific notation to keep the display readable.
The angstrom (Å = 0.1 nm = 10⁻¹⁰ m) is a non-SI unit that remains widely used in crystallography, atomic physics, and chemistry because typical interatomic distances (1–5 Å) are more conveniently expressed as whole numbers of angstroms than as fractions of a nanometre. To convert angstroms to nanometres divide by 10; to go the other way multiply by 10.

Divide by 1000. So 550 nm = 0.55 µm. This is the most common conversion in infrared optics, where wavelengths are typically quoted in micrometres rather than nanometres. To go back, multiply micrometres by 1000.
Visible light spans roughly 380 nm (violet) to 700 nm (deep red). Blue is near 450 nm, green near 550 nm, yellow near 580 nm. Ultraviolet (UV) is below 380 nm; near-infrared (NIR) begins above 700 nm. The number line in the output marks this range for wavelengths up to 2000 nm.
