Kā darbojas šis kalkulators?
ELSS is an equity mutual fund with a 3-year lock-in and Section 80C deduction up to ₹1.5 lakh per year (old tax regime only). Tax saved = min(investment, ₹1.5L) × marginal slab. Corpus grows via equity compounding; historical long-term CAGR is roughly 12–15 %, though returns are market-linked and not guaranteed. LTCG above ₹1 lakh/year is taxed at 10 %.
Formula
How this is calculated
ELSS funds invest primarily in equity and equity-related instruments (minimum 80 % in equities per SEBI mandate). They carry a mandatory 3-year lock-in per investment tranche — the shortest lock-in among all Section 80C instruments — after which units can be redeemed or held longer. Returns are market-linked and not guaranteed; historical long-term CAGR for the category has ranged from 12 to 16 %, but past performance does not predict future results.
The Section 80C deduction allows a maximum of ₹1,50,000 per financial year, applicable under the old income-tax regime (FY 2023-24 rates used here). Tax saved equals the deductible amount multiplied by your marginal slab rate. For example, investing ₹1.5 lakh at a 30 % slab saves ₹45,000 in tax. The new regime (post-2023) does not offer this deduction by default; consult a tax advisor for your specific situation.
For a lump-sum investment, the future value grows as P × (1 + r/100)^n. For SIP, each monthly instalment compounds from its investment date — the calculator uses the standard SIP formula which assumes end-of-month investments and the stated annual CAGR as a proxy. Long-term ELSS investing benefits significantly from the power of compounding when held beyond the minimum 3-year lock-in.
Biežāk uzdotie jautājumi
Each ELSS investment tranche is locked in for 3 years from the date of investment. For SIP investments, each monthly instalment has its own individual 3-year lock-in. After the lock-in period units can be redeemed at the prevailing NAV, or held indefinitely.
Long-term capital gains (LTCG) from ELSS redemption are taxed at 10 % on gains exceeding ₹1 lakh per financial year (as of FY 2023-24), without indexation. Since the minimum hold is 3 years, all ELSS gains qualify for LTCG treatment. The first ₹1 lakh of gains annually is tax-free, which effectively shelters a significant portion of returns for most retail investors.
No. The Section 80C deduction — including ELSS — is not available under the new concessional tax regime introduced in the Union Budget 2020 (default regime from FY 2023-24). If you choose the new regime, you cannot claim the ₹1.5 lakh deduction, though you can still invest in ELSS for its equity growth potential.
