How this is calculated

Pool volume is calculated from the pool geometry and the average depth. For pools with a sloped bottom, the calculator averages the shallow-end and deep-end depths; for above-ground pools with a flat floor, enter the same depth in both fields. The cross-sectional area is multiplied by average depth to get cubic feet, which converts at 7.481 gallons per cubic foot.

Chemical dosing depends on volume. For opening shock, the standard industry guideline is 1 lb of granular calcium hypochlorite (68% available chlorine) per 10,000 US gallons; enter your brand's label dose if it differs. Weekly chlorine tablet (trichlor, 90%) consumption is estimated at roughly 1 lb per 10,000 gallons per week under typical warm-weather use — more in direct sun and high bather loads. Test and adjust based on actual chlorine readings; aim for 1–3 ppm free chlorine.

Filter sizing follows the recommendation of a complete water turnover within 6–8 hours; the calculator shows the 6-hour rate as the pump minimum. Real pumps lose capacity to head pressure (pipe length, filter resistance), so add 15–25% headroom. Chemical dose guidelines are 2025 general industry estimates for average conditions; always read product labels and test water chemistry.

Measure the water depth at the shallowest point and at the deepest point, then average them. This approximation is accurate for pools with a gradual uniform slope. For pools with multiple depth zones (e.g., a wide flat shallow end, then a steep drop), split the pool into zones, calculate volume for each, and add them.

Shocking means adding a large dose of chlorine (typically 5–10 ppm) to oxidise organic waste, kill bacteria and break down combined chlorine (chloramines). Do it at pool opening, after heavy use, after rain or algae appearance, and at closing. Calcium hypochlorite (cal-hypo) and lithium hypochlorite are the most common shock products.
