GWAM Calculator — Gross Words A Minute Typing Speed

GWAM measures raw typing speed in words per minute before applying an error penalty. Enter the total keystrokes, the test duration and any uncorrected mistakes to get your Gross WPM, Net WPM and accuracy.
Count every key pressed including spaces and punctuation (5 keystrokes = 1 word)

Ako táto kalkulačka funguje?

GWAM = (total keystrokes ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. Subtract one error-word per minute to get Net WPM: NWAM = GWAM − (errors ÷ minutes). Enter keystrokes, test time and errors to see your gross speed, net speed and accuracy — benchmarked from beginner (< 30) to expert (> 110 WPM).

Vzorec
GWAM = (keystrokes ÷ 5) ÷ minutes • NWAM = GWAM − (errors ÷ minutes)
How this is calculated

In typing education, one "word" is standardised as five keystrokes — every character typed, including spaces and punctuation, counts toward the total. Dividing total keystrokes by 5 gives gross words typed; dividing that by the test duration in minutes gives GWAM. The gross figure ignores accuracy and is useful for measuring raw finger speed in isolation.

Net Words A Minute (NWAM) subtracts one word for every uncorrected error per minute from the gross score: NWAM = GWAM − (errors ÷ minutes). This is the figure most typing-test platforms report as your official "WPM" score because it rewards accuracy alongside speed. An error in a 1-minute test costs 1 word; the same error in a 2-minute test costs only 0.5 words, so longer tests soften the per-error penalty.

Accuracy is estimated as 1 − (errors ÷ gross words typed), expressed as a percentage. Note that some typing platforms count errors differently — for instance, they may penalise each individual wrong character rather than each wrong word — so results from different tools may not be directly comparable.

Často kladené otázky

A beginner typically scores 20–40 GWAM. Average adults reach 40–60 WPM; professional typists commonly exceed 80 WPM. World-record speeds exceed 200 WPM and require specialised training.

GWAM (Gross Words A Minute) counts all words typed, ignoring mistakes. WPM (or NWAM) subtracts an error penalty — usually one word per uncorrected error per minute — giving the net speed that reflects both speed and accuracy.

The five-keystroke convention is a standardised average that smooths out the difference between short and long words. It has been used in typing education since the early twentieth century and is still the international standard for timed tests.
