How this is calculated
Easter Sunday is defined as the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox (March 21). Because this depends on an ecclesiastical approximation of the lunar cycle rather than the actual astronomical moon, the date is computed algorithmically rather than looked up from a lunar table.
This calculator uses the Meeus/Jones/Butcher algorithm, the standard method for Gregorian Easter dates. It is valid for all years from 1583 (when the Gregorian calendar was introduced) onward, producing dates between 22 March (the earliest possible Easter) and 25 April (the latest possible Easter). The algorithm uses only integer arithmetic and modular division — no astronomical observation is required.
Note that Eastern Orthodox Easter uses the Julian calendar and the Julian version of the algorithm, so it typically falls 1–5 weeks later than Western (Gregorian) Easter. This calculator computes only the Gregorian (Western) date. The result always falls on a Sunday by construction.
