How this is calculated
The calculator converts both times to total minutes since midnight (hours × 60 + minutes), then subtracts the start from the end. If the result is negative — meaning the end time is earlier on the clock — 1,440 minutes (one full day) is added, making the calculation correct for overnight shifts.
The gross duration is the full time between start and end without any deductions. Subtracting any unpaid break (lunch, mandatory rest, etc.) gives the net hours worked, which is the payable figure in most payroll systems. Net time is floored at zero — you cannot work negative hours.
Decimal hours (e.g. 7.5 h) and the hours-minutes format (7 h 30 min) are both shown because payroll software typically uses decimal hours while human readable summaries favour hours and minutes. To convert decimal hours yourself: multiply the decimal part by 60 (0.5 × 60 = 30 min).

Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start time (e.g. 22:00 to 06:00), the calculator automatically adds 24 hours so the overnight duration is correct (8 h in that example).
Multiply the decimal part by 60: 0.75 × 60 = 45 min, so 7.75 h = 7 h 45 min. The calculator shows both formats automatically.
