How this is calculated
A mil (short for milli-inch, also called a thou in British English) is a unit of length equal to one thousandth of an inch. Since the inch is defined as exactly 25.4 mm, the conversion is exact: 1 mil = 0.001 × 25.4 mm = 0.0254 mm = 25.4 µm. There is no rounding — all conversions are exact multiples of 25.4.
Mils are widely used in fields where very small tolerances matter: PCB trace widths are commonly specified in mils (e.g. a 6 mil trace ≈ 0.152 mm), paint and coating thicknesses are quoted in mils, and wire and foil gauges in the US manufacturing sector also use the unit. The metric counterpart for the same scale is the micrometer (µm), which is why the µm result is shown prominently.
This calculator converts from mils to any common target unit. For the reverse — converting from µm, mm or inches back to mils — simply divide by the factor shown: for example, 50 µm ÷ 25.4 ≈ 1.969 mils.

1 millimeter = 1 ÷ 0.0254 ≈ 39.37 mils. Conversely, 1 mil = 0.0254 mm. So a PCB trace of 6 mils is about 0.152 mm wide.
Multiply the number of mils by 25.4 to get micrometers. This is exact because 1 inch = 25.4 mm = 25,400 µm, so 1 mil = 1/1000 inch = 25.4 µm. For example, 10 mils = 254 µm.
