How this is calculated
Imperial units are a system of weights and measures still widely used in the United States, and partially in the United Kingdom. For length, all values are converted through metres using exact SI definitions: 1 inch = 2.54 cm (exact), 1 foot = 12 inches, 1 yard = 3 feet, 1 mile = 1 760 yards. For weight, the avoirdupois pound (453.592 g) is the base; an ounce is 1/16 lb, a stone is 14 lb, and a US short ton is 2 000 lb. For volume, US and UK measures differ: a US fluid ounce is 29.5735 mL, a US gallon is 3.78541 L, while a UK (imperial) gallon is 4.54609 L — about 20% larger.
Temperature conversion uses the exact linear formulas: °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9, and Kelvin = °C + 273.15. The Fahrenheit and Celsius scales share the same value at −40°, and water freezes at 32°F / 0°C and boils at 212°F / 100°C.
All conversion factors in this calculator are exact or carry at least six significant figures, matching the precision needed for everyday tasks like cooking, DIY, travel and science homework. For precision engineering, always refer to the official SI definitions.

A US liquid gallon is 3.785 L while a UK (imperial) gallon is 4.546 L — about 20% larger. The same divergence applies to pints and fluid ounces: a US pint is 473 mL, a UK pint is 568 mL.
Both systems can be equally accurate — accuracy depends on the instrument, not the unit. Metric is based on the SI system with exact decimal relationships, making arithmetic simpler. Imperial requires memorising irregular ratios (12 inches per foot, 14 pounds per stone, etc.).
Subtract 32 then divide by 1.8 (or multiply by 5/9). A useful shortcut: subtract 30, then halve the result — this gives an approximation accurate to within a few degrees for everyday temperatures.
