How does this calculator work?
Acres/hr = (speed in mph × width in feet) / 8.25 × field efficiency. The constant 8.25 comes from 43,560 sq ft/acre ÷ 5,280 ft/mile. Field efficiency (typically 70–90%) accounts for turns, overlaps and stops. Multiply by 8 for an estimated daily capacity at an 8-hour working day.

How this is calculated
Coverage rate combines two physical facts: a machine moving at a given speed sweeps a band of ground equal to its working width, and the area covered each hour is simply the product of those two dimensions expressed in acres. One mile is 5,280 ft, so in one hour at S mph the machine travels S × 5,280 ft. Multiplying by the working width W ft gives a swept area of S × W × 5,280 sq ft. Since one acre is 43,560 sq ft, the theoretical acres per hour is S × W × 5280 / 43560 = S × W / 8.25. This constant 8.25 (= 43560/5280) is the traditional shorthand used in agronomy — multiply speed (mph) by width (ft), divide by 8.25, and you have theoretical ac/hr.
Field efficiency accounts for everything that prevents a machine from operating at 100% utilisation: time spent turning at headlands, adjusting overlaps to avoid missed strips, stopping to fill a seeder or sprayer, unclogging a residue chopper, and operator fatigue. Typical values range from about 65% for hay rakes (many stops, wide swing) to 90%+ for sprayers with GPS auto-guidance. The effective coverage is the theoretical rate multiplied by the efficiency fraction.
All values here assume a flat field and constant speed. Hilly terrain, wet conditions, and crop residue can all reduce actual efficiency below the estimate. The 8-hour day figure assumes 8 continuous hours at the effective rate, which is a planning ceiling — most days include additional downtime.

Row-crop planters typically operate at 60–75% field efficiency due to frequent end-of-row turns and occasional seed or fertiliser stops. Modern precision-planting systems with GPS section control and reduced overlap can push this toward 80%.
Coverage rate is directly proportional to working width. Doubling the implement width doubles the acres per hour at the same speed. This is why wider headers, booms and drill sections are the fastest way to increase daily capacity.
