How does this calculator work?
Enter your job category, the share of routine tasks, and how much social interaction and physical dexterity your work requires. The calculator combines a research-based baseline risk for your field with adjustments for those factors to estimate a 0–95% automation risk score. High routine work raises risk; social and physical demands lower it.
Formula
How this is calculated
The model starts with a baseline automation-risk score for your job category drawn from landmark automation research — primarily the Frey & Osborne (2013) Oxford study that scored 702 US occupations, cross-checked with McKinsey Global Institute (2017) estimates of automatable task shares by sector and the WEF Future of Jobs Report (2023). These baselines reflect the share of task-time that could plausibly be automated by current or near-term AI and robotics.
Three sliders then adjust the baseline. Routine work percentage shifts the score most strongly: going from 0% routine (highly variable, creative tasks) to 100% routine (the same steps every time) adds or subtracts up to ±12.5 percentage points. Social and interpersonal interaction is a strong protective factor — roles requiring constant human judgement, empathy or negotiation are substantially harder to automate, cutting risk by up to 25 points at the highest setting. Fine physical dexterity is a smaller but real barrier: robotics and manipulation are still expensive and error-prone for tasks requiring human-like fine motor control.
Important limitations: this model is deliberately simplified. Real automation risk depends on firm-level decisions about AI adoption, regulatory environment, economic trade-offs between automating and hiring, and the specific mix of sub-tasks within a role — two people with the same job title can face very different risks. Use this as a conversation starter, not a career prediction.
Frequently asked questions
Research consistently puts data entry, routine clerical work, customer service scripting, and predictable manufacturing tasks at the highest risk — many already seeing 50–90% automation of individual task steps. Healthcare clinical roles, creative work, teaching, and leadership roles consistently rank lowest, because they demand social intelligence, unpredictable judgement and tacit knowledge that AI currently struggles with.
Not necessarily. High automation risk means parts of your current role could be done by AI — but history shows technology usually reshapes jobs rather than eliminating them outright. Routine sub-tasks get automated, while people move to oversight, exception-handling, and higher-value work. The transition speed and outcome depend heavily on your industry, firm and adaptability.
Skills that raise your resilience: interpersonal communication, complex problem-solving, creative thinking, managing ambiguity, and physical tasks in unstructured environments. Learning to work with AI tools (prompt engineering, data literacy, AI supervision) is also increasingly protective — people who use AI effectively are more valuable than those who ignore it.
