Divide the audiobook's full 1× runtime by your playback speed multiplier. A 10-hour book at 1.5× takes 6 h 40 m, saving 3 h 20 m. Use the speed-vs-time chart to pick a rate that balances time savings with comfortable comprehension — most listeners find 1.25×–1.75× ideal.

How this is calculated

Audiobook apps such as Audible, Libby, and Spotify speed up narration by compressing pauses and shortening phoneme durations, so speech stays intelligible at higher rates. The math is pure division: take the book's stated runtime at 1× and divide by your speed multiplier. A 10-hour book at 1.5× takes 6 h 40 m; at 2× it takes exactly 5 hours.

The calculator also shows the time saved versus listening at normal speed, and draws a speed-versus-time curve from 0.75× to 3× so you can see the full trade-off at a glance. The relationship is hyperbolic: moving from 1× to 1.5× saves much more time per unit increase than moving from 2× to 2.5×.

Note that the book's listed runtime is a publisher estimate, often rounded to the nearest 15 minutes, and some apps measure slightly differently. For exact results, use the runtime shown in your app's player screen.

Frequently asked questions

Research is mixed: habitual listeners often retain as much at 1.5×–2× as at 1×, but unfamiliar vocabulary, dense argumentation, or heavy accents tend to suffer at high speeds. Start at 1.25× and increase gradually until you notice comprehension dropping, then back off slightly.

Audible and Libby go up to 3×, Apple Books up to 2×, and Spotify up to 3.5×. Speeds above 2.5× are rarely useful for sustained listening — most people find the sweet spot between 1.25× and 2×.

Apps calculate remaining time based on the portion of the file you haven't played yet, multiplied by your current speed. If you switch speeds mid-book the estimate updates instantly. This calculator uses the full runtime at 1× and your chosen speed — it gives the total session time, not the remaining time from where you are.
