How this is calculated

Basal area (BA) is the cross-sectional area of a tree stem measured at breast height — universally defined as 1.3 m (4.5 ft) above ground. It is calculated using the formula for the area of a circle: BA = π/4 × d², where d is the diameter at breast height (DBH) in metres. The result is in square metres. A useful forestry shortcut: BA (m²) ≈ 0.00007854 × DBH² when DBH is in centimetres.

Stand basal area (m²/ha) is the sum of the individual tree basal areas per unit area, and equals BA_per_tree × trees_per_hectare when all trees are assumed to have the same diameter. In real forest inventories, trees are measured individually and their BAs are summed. Stand basal area is a key structural metric for assessing timber volume, stocking density, light availability and competition.

Typical stand basal area values range from about 10–20 m²/ha in open forests to 40–60 m²/ha in dense mature stands. National forestry management guidelines (which vary by country and forest type) often specify target stand BA ranges for sustainable yield. DBH is measured outside bark; enter the appropriate value for your survey protocol.
