How does this calculator work?
A standard rule: 100 lights per foot of tree height, 10–15 ornaments per foot, 9 feet of garland per foot, and a tree skirt sized to ⅓ of the tree height. Enter your height and preferred density — the calculator adjusts everything proportionally. A 6-foot tree typically needs ~600 lights, ~72 ornaments, and ~54 ft of garland.
Formula
How this is calculated
Professional tree decorators use simple per-foot ratios as a starting point. The most widely cited guideline is 100 light bulbs per foot of tree height — so a 6-foot tree needs roughly 600 bulbs. For a denser, more dramatic look, many decorators use 150–200 per foot. Since light strands typically come in 100-bulb lengths, the calculation also tells you roughly how many strands to buy.
Ornament quantities are similarly estimated per foot: 10–15 per foot suits most trees, giving 60–90 ornaments for a 6-foot tree. Garland and ribbon follow a 9-feet-per-foot guideline — a spiral wrap from base to top on a 6-foot tree needs about 54 feet. These figures assume a typical full-bodied artificial or natural tree; a slim or pencil tree may need fewer.
The tree skirt diameter suggestion (tree height ÷ 3, converted to inches) covers the base without looking over- or under-sized. All ratios are editable so you can match your personal style — a minimalist tree might use half the defaults; a maximalist display might triple them.
Frequently asked questions
Most strands are 100 bulbs (about 33 ft of wire). Divide the total lights estimate by 100 to get the number of strands. For a 6-foot tree at 100 lights/foot = 600 lights, you need about 6 strands. Round up to ensure full coverage.
Yes — both types use the same per-foot guideline since the count is about visual density, not wattage. LEDs use far less power (about 80% less), so you can safely string more strands together without overloading a circuit, which makes higher densities more practical.
The 9-feet-per-foot rule gives a comfortable wrap with moderate spacing between loops. For a tighter, luxurious look use 12–15 ft per foot; for a minimalist style use 6 ft per foot. Ribbon behaves similarly but is sold by the yard — divide the foot estimate by 3 to convert.
