How does this calculator work?
To split a gift budget, divide the total by the number of recipients for an equal share, or give each person budget × weight ÷ total weight for a weighted split. This tool does both, forces at least one recipient, and shows every person’s share in a donut chart so the amounts always add up to your full budget.
Formula
How this is calculated
Enter your total gift budget — the full amount you intend to spend across everyone. Then pick a split method. In Equal split mode you give a number of recipients; the calculator forces this to at least 1 (you cannot divide a budget among zero people) and computes perPerson = totalBudget ÷ numberOfPeople so everyone receives an identical share.
In Weighted list mode you type one recipient per line as a name followed by a weight, for example "Mom 3". Higher weights get a bigger slice. Each person’s share is totalBudget × theirWeight ÷ (sum of all weights), so the shares always add back up to your full budget. Lines without a numeric weight default to a weight of 1, and lines with a zero or negative weight are ignored.
All amounts use your locale’s number formatting and are rounded to two decimals for display, though the underlying split uses full precision. The result shows the average per person, a summary of the totals, and a donut chart visualizing each recipient’s portion of the budget.
Frequently asked questions
Each recipient gets totalBudget × their weight ÷ the sum of all weights. So if Mom has weight 3 and the weights sum to 11, Mom receives 3/11 of the budget. Weights are relative, so 1-2-3 and 2-4-6 give the same result.
The number of people is forced to a minimum of 1, so the entire budget is assigned to a single share rather than producing a divide-by-zero error.
Yes. Both equal and weighted modes distribute exactly 100% of the total budget, so the individual shares sum back to the amount you entered (small rounding differences may appear only in the rounded display values).
